Beliefs About the Purpose of Education

Education, simply stated, is the process of gaining knowledge, learning forms of proper conduct and acquiring technical competency in a specific field. It involves cultivating the mind and instilling values that enable an individual to distinguish between the right and the wrong. It includes developing skills pertaining to a specific field and also aims at achieving overall development.

Formal education is divided into phases starting from primary school, continuing through higher education followed by education in a specific field (specialization). But education never really ends. You learn something from every incident you are exposed to, every experience you have and every person you meet. The process of education is believed to begin in the mother’s womb and it continues throughout one’s life.

We seldom think of what the real purpose of education is. We hardly think of the reason why education is so important. It is while we grow up that we begin to realize the role of education and understand how it applies to daily life. We begin to realize the importance of education only after it begins finding applications in our professional and personal life. If education is the process of gathering knowledge, it can never really end as knowledge is infinite and one can never claim to have acquired all of it.

Goal of Education

The fundamental purpose of education is to teach a person to read and write, that is to make him literate. Reading abilities that are acquired in school, go a long way in enabling an individual to learn more. The fundamentals of science and math which one acquires in school, are pillars on which his understanding of life is based. How did you know the Earth is round? Who told you why the sky looks blue? How did you know 2 + 2 is 4? How did you know you have 10 fingers, two eyes and a nose? It’s through education that you learned about yourself and the world around you. That’s the basic purpose of education – to make an individual aware.

Education brings about an overall progress of society. It gives an individual, better prospects of earning a living. It makes him self-sufficient. It produces individuals who are not just resources but assets for the society. It develops people who can contribute to the wealth creation of a country. While people are earning for themselves, they are also creating wealth for the organization they work with. With every flourishing organization, the government earns (in the form of taxes paid or direct profit-making in case of government organizations). Every organization thus shares the nation’s responsibility of achieving monetary gains. The educated lot in a country helps it earn money, the means of living.

Education is believed to be responsible for the cultivation of a civilized society. Imparting education to people enables the development of a responsible society. Education helps in imbibing moral values in individuals and their education in turn, helps in the creation of a cultured society. Education gives one a deep understanding of life, making him capable of living.

Education helps an individual acquire social skills, which enable him to interact with people around, maintain social relations and blend well with the others in society. As a part of the educational system, each of us learns with a group of other individuals of our age. Throughout education, we are part of a larger group. These years expose us to competition. This is when an individual tastes both successes and failures. Education also helps in the building of interpersonal skills. This is what education is aimed at – development of social skills.

Education helps create good teachers. On acquiring education, an individual gains the ability to share what he has learned with those less learned. He acquires the ability to impart knowledge to the less knowledgeable, he gains the ability to teach. Now, not every educated individual is a good teacher. But education is definitely a doorway to learning – where one becomes the ambassador of education.

Bill Beattie, a famous author believes that education should teach us how to think, rather than telling us what to think. Education does play a role in developing one’s creative thinking skills and imaginative power. Eric Hoffer, an American social writer, believes that the main purpose of education is to build a will and facility to learn. He believes that the objective of education is to produce learning individuals and not necessarily learned ones. Bishop Creighton, on similar lines states that education should aim at creating people who continually ask questions. By this he means to say that education should fuel one’s thirst for knowledge.

It’s on the basis of education that an individual can pursue his dreams. Education helps a person meet his career objectives and achieve economic growth. It builds resourceful human beings out of illiterate individuals. It gives a sense of personal fulfillment. An educated individual having experienced its positive effects, encourages the idea of education. He promotes education in his family. Thus he contributes to the spread of it, starting from a small unit of society – his family. The idea of education and a strong belief in its benefits, are transferred from one generation to another. One educated individual can prove to be instrumental in the educational development of his family, the future generations and in turn the society. The spread of education is one of its purposes.

Choosing a Good High School for Your Child

A good school allows the child to not just excel academically, but also motivates him/her to explore other interests. This leads to the all-round development of the child which enables him/her to succeed in life. With top colleges in the country receiving a record numbers of applications each year and with the eligibility criteria ramped up, it is important for parents to choose a high school that ensures quality education that opens avenues for further academic and personal growth of the child.

Instead of choosing a neighborhood school or one of repute, select a high school that allows a child to grow intellectually and personally. It is not important to find the best school in the world, but rather find one that will support and enhance your child’s interests and passion. In this Buzzle article, we provide some simple tips on how to choose a good high school for your child that will help him or her excel in life.

Shortlisting a High School:

The age-old debate about public and private schools leaves many parents confused. Is it better to opt for a local public school or choose an exclusive private school with a hefty tuition fee? Public schools administered by local, state, or national governments offer free education. They are often criticized for a high pupil-teacher ratio and bureaucratic style of functioning. However, these schools do have their own set of advantages like a diverse student population, qualified teachers, and provision of programs for children with special needs.

Private schools, also known as independent schools, are funded in whole by students’ tuition fees. Although these schools charge quite a hefty amount, they do have the advantage of smaller classes, less bureaucracy, and more parent involvement. This does not mean that just because you pay more at a private school, the education is better.

A good public school may be a better match for your child. You need to look beneath the label of ‘public’ or ‘private’ to choose a school that is a right for your kid. Apart from public and private schools, there are charter schools, religious schools, and special performing arts schools.

Academic Record and Reputation of the School

This is probably the first thing that parents consider while choosing a school for their child. All parents want their child to excel academically. Therefore, academic performance of the school and its overall reputation is one of the major deciding factors when choosing a high school.

If the students of a school consistently perform well in tests and examinations, it is a good indicator of the academic quality of the school. You can check how students at a school perform as compared to others, using statistics provided by The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and the State Department of Education.

Consider a School with Good Teachers
The importance of good teachers cannot be overstated. The high school curriculum is structured around core academics. This is vital as it forms the basis of future college education. Apart from wide array of subjects like physics and calculus, high school students begin to study foreign languages. They also have greater flexibility with electives such as art. Considering the diverse topics and subjects being taught, it is imperative that the teachers be experts of the subjects that they teach.

Check the Number of Students

The student-teacher ratio in a class and the overall number of students in a school is extremely important.

One of the reasons why many parents prefer a private school is because of the small class sizes. A ratio of fifteen children per teacher ensures that the child gets adequate personal attention. However, it is important to consider that there is no set ratio for every student. While some students do well in a smaller environment with personal attention, others thrive in larger schools with a wide variety of classes and activities.

Along with appropriate educational qualification, teachers should also possess necessary license and certification for teaching that is provided by an accredited teacher’s training program such as National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). If the school offers special courses, then there should be specialist staff such as music or art teachers who have the necessary training and skill to teach the subject.

Check the Available Courses

If the child is interested in a special subject, you need to look for schools that offer that course. Ideally, a good high school should have a balanced, comprehensive curriculum. In addition to this, there are many schools that also offer specialized classes like astronomy, music, and computing. You also need to consider additional facilities at the school, like libraries or sports facilities.

Check the Extracurricular Activities on Offer

Extracurricular activities and events promote socialization, raise self-esteem, and allow the child to explore his/her varied interests. Choose a school that offers a broad range of activities that complement and are an extension of the academic program. Performing arts, competitive sports, and other after-school activities help in the development of leadership and additional skills in children.

Consider the Distance

It is important to consider the distance of the school from home. Can the child go to school without being parent-driven? Is it easy to go for after-school activities? A school which is excellent but is too far away from home can be frustrating for parents as well as children who have to spend a lot of time traveling.

Involve the Child

It is vital to consider a teenager’s needs when choosing a high school for him or her. Involve the child actively in the selection process. Ask him/her about his/her interests and goals so that you can choose a school that is aligned with these interests and goals. Some teens would want to go to the same school as their friends. As a parent, you need to consider these things as well.

Look for Maintenance and Hygiene

There are many schools that offer tours and host open-house events. Although you might not get to spend time in a class, you can verify if the school maintains cleanliness, hygiene, and offers a good environment. It is also important to consider the area around the school, and ensure that it is safe for the child. Check the playground equipment to see if it is safe and well-maintained.

Best Homeschooling Curriculum For Your Child

Homeschooling has become a more popular option for many parents today. Homeschooling involves only your son or daughter and you or a tutor in the never-ending quest for knowledge. This gives the parent the chance to lead his son or daughter towards academic and social development. While this is a good option for you and your son or daughter, homeschooling your child presents a lot of logistical challenges. This article will describe how to get past one hurdle which is choosing a homeschooling curriculum that will serve your children best.

The curriculum best suited for your child is dependent on your child’s current age, abilities and educational level. It is important to note that the curriculum should be tailored to your child’s interests, capabilities and age because if not, the purpose of all this will be defeated. There are five key factors that one must consider in picking a good curriculum for your child.

  • Reading Comprehension and Communication Skills

This is one of the most basic lessons that any homeschooled child must take a good hold of. Every step of the way is based on this skill. Vocabulary, sentence construction, context clues and other subject matters are involved here. Communication too, is very important. Teaching your child to express himself well in both written and oral means is an essential lesson, especially in this fast-paced world. This will allow him to have good public relation skills.

  • Problem-Solving Skills

This is best taught by adding lessons in math and science to your child’s homeschooling curriculum. Math and science encourages children to analyze problems and situations better and with insight. For example, giving math problems or teaching the scientific method to children and giving them a chance to apply it through experiments would teach them how to process information systematically and logically.

  • Values

As parents, we teach our children proper etiquette, manners and different values that help build their character. Incorporating this in the curriculum would help the child see meaning in the abstract things that he is taught. For example, teaching them the value of helping others would give meaning to the innovations they would think of in their science experiments.

  • Technology

What better way to help your child cope with the modern times but through equipping him with computer know-how? Basics such as word processing to advanced lessons such as web design and graphic design are some of the things worth teaching to your child.

Importance of Character Education for Your Child

Quality character education helps schools create a safe, caring and inclusive learning environment for every student and supports academic development. It fosters qualities that will help students be successful as citizens, in the workplace, and with the academic curriculum. It lays the foundation to help students be successful in all of the goals we have for our public schools. It is the common denominator that will help schools reach all of their goals!

CHARACTER EDUCATION IS NOT ONE MORE THING ON YOUR PLATE!  IT IS THE PLATE!

Simply put, character education is everything you do that influences the character of the kids you teach. But to put it in a more focused light, character education is the deliberate effort to help people understand, care about, and act upon core ethical values. When we think about the kind of character we want for our children, it’s clear that we want them to be able to judge what is right, care deeply about what is right, and then do what they believe to be right—even in the face of pressure from without and temptation from within.

Dr. Dennis Regling has introduced a Character Education assembly program for elementary schools. His program includes an exciting school assembly featuring puppets, magic and storytelling as Dr. Regling introduces students to the Six Pillars of Character. His program, The Road To Success,” includes teacher notes and worksheets to keep the learning going after the show. Schools also recieve several posters to post throughout the school to reinforce the lessons presented.

A complete program like Dr. Regling’s not only introduces students and teachers to the necessary character traits for a successful life, but the additional materials allows teachers and administrators to reinforce the ideas throughout the school year through various educational activities that complement the curriculum. Instead of being one more thing for teachers to do, the program shows teachers how to implement the ideas through lessons already being taught.

Formal Education vs Home School

The debate among many people is whether homeschooling kids is better than formal education. The former would be fruitful if home school is done the right way. Children adopt a customized curriculum provided by their parents whereas in a private school, they are forced to learn whatever is taught by the teachers. Each child is unique and the style of learning differs from one child to another. Some children are good at grasping information from textbooks and a theory based method would be useful for them but some of them prefer practical method of teaching where it’s easy for them to remember and this kind of an approach is also more interesting to them.

Parents who home school their kids should provide a more pleasing and healthy learning environment for their kids. Apart from academics, children learn to bond with their family, which is an advantage inhome school. Good habits can be instilled in them. Apart from concentrating on academics, children have ample time to develop their talents. Everyone learns from each and every task that we do, whether it is routine or a onetime task. Children can go for music classes, swimming, skating etc. They can do well in their academics as well as extracurricular activities whereas there is a time constraint in private schools. Some schools demand children to be more focused on academics than extracurricular activities, as they need more grades.

More often when parents weigh the options of home school and formal education, one major issue is that kids don’t get an opportunity to socialize if parents home school them. At school, children can play together and participate in competitions. It’s easy for them to socialize but peer influence can change the attitude of your kids easily and it’s difficult for parents to know if their kids are being influenced in the right or the wrong way. Children can always interact and get along with other kids who are being homeschooled by their parents. They tend to become more co operative and disciplined. Kids who are homeschooled will get more attention and discussing about their academics and extracurricular activities becomes easy, as children feel more comfortable in such an environment.

Sending your child to a private school is expensive. Course fee, educational trips, projects, cost of resources, transportation are expensive whereas when parents home school they know what exactly their children need and based on that they can buy the required materials. When your kids join the other homeschooled ones, educational trips will be less expensive and sometimes you need pay even a penny. Some people believe that children who are being home schooled will have difficulty in getting college admissions which will lead to less number of career opportunities but that’s not true as most colleges prefer homeschooled children as they are more disciplined and self motivated to learn new things. Inhome school, every parent struggles to get their children in the right track in the beginning but ultimately they learn how to home school their kids.
